The J. Wayne Leonard Prosperity Center is a one-stop financial stability center offering an array of programming to the residents of New Orleans, including financial education and coaching, credit building and counseling, benefits screening and income tax assistance.

Located inside United Way’s offices on Canal Street, this facility also houses United Way’s IDA Project, a matched savings account program that helps individuals with low incomes purchase long-term assets through a 4:1 match of their own savings. The program is addressing the challenges of intergenerational poverty by providing opportunities for participants to purchase a new home or vehicle, start or expand a small business, or pay for post-secondary education – all through their IDA accounts.

Through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Entergy’s certified volunteers work alongside community partners to help qualifying families file their taxes for free. If your household earned less than $64,000 last year, you likely qualify.

Entergy attempts to contact every customer by phone the day before they are scheduled to have their power cut off. While, in many cases, the reminder results in quick payment of the bill in full, qualifying customers are offered payment extensions or delayed payment options.
